Засоби вираження кратності у сучасній англійській мові

Значення миттєвості актуалізується за допомогою: 

а) темпоральних обставин suddenly [quickly and unexpectedly – LDCE: 1659], instantly [immediately – LDCE: 843], immediately [without delay: at once – LDCE: 811], rapidly [very quickly and in a short time – LDCE: 1357], які увиразнюють однократну реалізацію дії. Наприклад: Instantly, the car leaped back onto the roadway (S. Marton) ; The strip of mirror suddenly flashed at a struck match (A. Carter) ; Suddenly her heart jerked as the answer came like a flash of lightning (M. Bowring) ; 

б) for-адвербіалій: for an instant, for a split second, for a fraction of a second, for a second, for a moment тощо. Наприклад: For an instant his eyes blazed (M. Gladstone) ; Klickman was a meathead with little finesse, and for a split second his shoulders flinched as if he would accept the challenge (J. Grisham) ; Her eyes flickered for a split-second to see Lucenzo’s reaction (S. Wood) ; A message flashed for a fraction of a second on a cinema screen … (R. White) ; 

в) модифікатора once [a single occasion; one time only – WUCD: 554; on one occasion only – LDCE: 1147]. Наприклад: The door banged once again (T. Barnes) ; «0!» said Mr. Crawley, and pushed his head once forward and began again to read a great pamphlet with which he was busy (W. Thackary) ; 

г) обставин, які позначають момент здійснення дії: Hearing this, Bilbil jumped up at once (L. F. Baum) ; 

д) прийменникових та прислівникових груп, порівнянь, наприклад: …Melanie and Pitty leaped as though a bomb had exploded (M. Mitchell) ; His master’s voice acted on Buck (the dog) like an electric shock. He sprang to his feet and ran to the bank ahead of men (J. London) ; I leaped as if it had been fired at me, and shrieked at Posi (D. Hill). 

У другому розділі “Категорія кратності та її функціонально-семантичне поле” проаналізовано звуконаслідувальні дієслова, RL-дієслова та сталі дієслівно-субстантивні сполучення типу to give a glance, які належать до семельфактивних і мультиплікативних дієслів та є компонентами функціонально-семантичного поля кратності. 

Результати дослідження показали, що більшість звуконаслідувальних дієслів (їх перелік подано у додатках 4, 5 до дисертаційного дослідження) позначає невимушене звучання, джерелом якого є людина, яка створює цей звук ненавмисно, неістота чи природна сила. Якщо джерелом звуку виступає людина, то невимушеність звуку передбачає ненавмисність дій, наявність певного фізіологічного чи емоційно-психологічного стану, тобто ці дії є реакцією людини на зовнішні чи внутрішні подразники. У випадку, коли джерелом звуку є неістота, невимушеність звуку передбачає наявність зовнішнього каузатора. Якщо ж джерелом звуку є природна сила, то невимушеність звуку зумовлена природою цього явища, тобто не передбачає контролю з боку людини. 

Отож, диференційними компонентами значення звуконаслідувальних дієслів є ненавмисність, наявність певного фізіологічного чи емоційно-психологічного стану людини, зовнішнього каузатора та відсутність контролю з боку виконавця дії. 

За ознакою кратності звуконаслідувальні дієслова поділяємо на: 

а) дієслова, що виражають однократну дію: blurt, bolt, gasp3, smack2, snap4, squeak3, whoop, yelp; gasp1, hush, shush, puff2; bang1, bump1, burp, clack1, clang1, clash, clank1, crash3, explode, flip, smash, snap1, snip, squeak1 тощо, наприклад: “The code, ” Sophie blurted, in sudden revelation (D. Brown) ; She put an arm around Arnie’s

waist and smacked him loudly on the cheek (St. King) ; The racing train smashed into the rear coach, lifting and crumpling it in a fraction of a second… (M. Banks) ; 

б) дієслова, що виражають багатократну дію – boom3, buzz3, clatter8, mumble1, 2, snivel, whiff2; chatter1, clatter7, rattle6, slurt; chipper, chirm, coo1, cuckoo1, gnarl, hee-haw2, mourn, warble; buzz2, clatter2, echo1, 2, jingle1, knell1, knoll1, pound1, rattle2, swish, tinkle1 тощо, наприклад: The helmet speaker buzzed, then went silent (M. Banks) ; The sheer walls and slim towers of the prison-palace echoed and reflected with the booms and flashes of continuing fire-fights (M. Banks) ; 

в) дієслова, які позначають як однократну, так і багатократну дії: chirp2, crack4, groan2, growl1, hiccup2, screech2, shriek2, sigh2, sob2, spit3, thunder3; belch, cough, gnash, hiccup1, sigh1, sneeze, snort, whistle, yawn1; bellow1, bray1, bugle2, cackle1, chirp1, crow1, mew, purr1, snarl1, squawk1; bang2, blast, chap, chug, click1, clink1, crackle1, creak1, crunch1, ding1, groan3, jangle1, jar2, shriek3, strike1 тощо, порівняйте: Suddenly Marillion shrieked, covering his head with his woodharp as a horse leapt over their rock (G. Martin) та They screamed terrified high-pitched wails that shrieked in my earphones (B. Bova) ; John put two fingers in his mouth and whistled (G. Martin) та He whistled tunelessly as he went (C.
