У дисертації вперше в українському мовознавстві ґрунтовно досліджена фразеологія, засвідчена в різних за стилями українських пам’ятках XVI – XVII ст., виявлено її багатство, визначено її джерела та шляхи формування. На базі фактичного матеріалу (понад 500 фразеологізмів) здійснено класифікацію фразеологічних одиниць в ідеографічному аспекті, розглянуто найпродуктивніші фразеосемантичні групи, семантичні ряди та структурні моделі, які формують фразеологізми на позначення фізичного та психоемоційного станів людини, її поведінки та мовної діяльності. Частково здійснено порівняльний аналіз зафіксованих фразеологізмів з аналогічними та ідентичними фразеологічними одиницями інших слов’янських мов, простежено їхній історичний розвиток, частотність використання фразеологізмів у різних стилях української мови XVI –XVII ст., визначено системні зв’язки на фразеологічному рівні.

В диссертации впервые в украинском языковедении детально исследована фразеология, представлена в разных за стилями украинских памятниках XVI – XVII вв., выявлено её богатство, установлены её источники и пути формирования. На базе фактического материала (более 500 фразеологизмов) осуществлена классификация фразеологических единиц в идеографическом аспекте, также рассмотрены наиболее продуктивные фразеосемантические группы, семантические ряды и структурные модели, которые формируют фразеологизмы на обозначения физического и психоэмоционального состояний человека, его поведения и языковой деятельности. Частично совершён сравнительный анализ зафиксированных фразеологизмов из аналогичными и идентичными фразеологическими единицами других славянских языков, расследовано их историческое развитие, частотность употребления фразеологизмов в разных стилях украинского языка XVI – XVII вв., системные связи на фразеологическом уровне.

The present dissertation is an attempt at a thorough analysis of phraseological units in the Ukrainian sources of the 16th-17th centuries. The origin of phraseological units and ways of their formation have been thoroughly analyzed. Special attention has been paid to phraseo-semantic groupings, semantic characteristics and structural types of phraseological units used to denote physical and emotional state of people, their behaviour and speech. Historical development of phraseological units and their correspondences in other Slavonic languages have also been subjected to investigation.

The dissertation consists of an introduction, three chapters, conclusions, lists of references and an appendix.

Chapter I “Theoretical Preliminaries to the Investigation of Phraseology” elaborates the methodological foundation for the investigation of historical phraseology. The chapter provides an analysis of divergences in the existing opinions on the subject and scope of phraseology. It also examines the main causes which led to variety of phraseological terms and their polysemy. Phraseology is considered in a ‘narrow’ sense and is discriminated from aphorisms, proverbs, sayings and terminological word combinations. The chapter provides a definition of the notion of phraseological unit, highlights its characteristic features and peculiarities. It also provides a review of systemic connections in the sphere of phraseology.

Chapter II “Semantico-Structural Types of Phraseological Units” is devoted to the ideographic classification of the collected material, comparative-historical analysis of phraseological units with particular reference to the prior and posterior periods of the development of the Ukrainian language as well as comparison with Belarus, Russian, Bulgarian, Polish and Check. The origin of phraseological units is described in this chapter, systemic connections on the phraseological level are identified and illustrated. 

Chapter III “Stylistic Peculiarities of Phraseological Units” is concerned with the analysis of functional styles and frequency of occurrence of different phraseological units in accordance with their stylistic classification (colloquial, bookish) in various functional styles of the period (official documents, church documents, belles-lettres, publicistic, scientific prose). The chapter highlights the main factors which influenced stability or instability of the investigated phraseological units, their stylistic function.

The present research has provided the theoretical generalization and a new explanation of semantic, structural and style peculiarities of phraseological units found in Ukrainian sources of the 16th-17th centuries.

More than 500 phraseological units chosen from Ukrainian sources of the period under study have been subjected to analysis. The investigation focused mainly on verbal phraseological units – the most numerous group that appeared as a result of metonymic, metaphoric or hyperbolic transfer of meaning. These phraseological units serve as a formation basis of 4 major phraseo-semantic groups and 13 productive semantic series. In the phraseo-semantic groups under analysis the most prolific in phraseological units is the group “Human behaviour” in which there are 6 productive and 10 non-productive semantic series. It can be explained by the fact that human behaviour is a separate category connected with psychic processes and states. Among the numerous semantic series only 2 possess positive connotations, whereas 7 semantic series possess negative connotations. The rest of the series possess neither positive nor negative connotations, nevertheless within these series the majority of phraseological units have negative connotations.

The findings of the submitted dissertation will contribute to the theory of phraseology. They may also find application in theoretical courses in Lexicology and Phraseology, History of the Ukrainian Language, compilation of historical phraseological dictionaries.
